Hatching eggs will most likely not be available this year due to limited supply. If they do become available, it will be towards the end of the breeding season.

The Indio Gigante hails from Brazil. It is known as the world's tallest chicken breed. Roosters can reach more than 42 inches tall, measured horizontally outstretched from the tip of their longest toe to their beak. People always marvel at seeing these mini dinosaurs in our yard. We have kept and bred a flock of these birds since 2020. Although originally bred from gamebirds, we have found this breed is not very gamey. They will defend themselves, their flockmates, and territory fiercely but are not overly aggressive. Roosters can be penned together as long as they were raised together but take care when introducing new birds to the flock. They are not aggressive towards humans. In fact, they are often very curious about their humans and will follow you around for treats. This breed is prone to crooked toes and leg issues on account of their incredible growth rate and huge feet. Roost bars should be extra wide and low to the ground. They oftentimes prefer to lay on the ground instead of on a roost bar. We recommend starting them on a regimen of extra calcium carbonate (absorbed faster than oyster shell), vitamins, minerals, and greens as soon as 3 weeks old. A minimal 16% protein feed works well once they are out of the brooder so they do not grow too fast. The Indio Gigante matures very slowly and will continue to grow in size until about 18 months old. They feather in very slowly so do not do well in the cold. If raising chicks during winter or wet weather, make sure they are protected from drafts, cold, and rain. Even though they outgrow other breeds quickly, because they feather in slowly and can be clumsy as lanky juveniles, take extra care when raising them with other breeds. They often get knocked down and trampled or feather pecked. Hens are good seasonal layers of large tan eggs, do go broody, and make excellent mothers.

The Indio Polaco is the naked neck version of the Indio Gigante. They are the same in most aspects accept the Polaco has a bare neck and much less feathering. They tend to look almost completely bald all the time, meaning their dewlaps also look more pronounced at maturity. Our breeding pens are set up with heterozygous naked neck Polaco roosters over Gigante and Polaco hens. Chicks can hatch either naked neck or normal. We also have a group of Gigante juveniles out of Rare Rooster Acres' Colossus and Valero in the grow out pen. These should make it to the breeding pen by the end of 2026. We absolutely love these gentle giants on the homestead. If you want a talking point for your chicken yard, this is the bird for you. Both hens and roosters are large and would make good table birds as well. We've processed some roosters that were almost the size of small turkeys.

We cannot guarantee that any chicks will grow up to be a certain height. We try to be mindful in breeding and use the best representations of the breed standard with height and health being at the top of the list. However, most birds will not hit the 40 inch mark. Please evaluate each chick/bird on its own merits.
