Hatching eggs will most likely not be available this year due to limited supply. If they do become available, it will be towards the end of the breeding season.
The Indio/Polaco Gigante hails from Brazil. It is known as the world's tallest chicken breed. Roosters can reach more than 42 inches tall, measured horizontally outstretched from the tip of their longest toe to their beak. People always marvel at seeing these mini dinosaurs in our yard. We have kept and bred a flock of Indio Gigante since 2020 and added the naked neck Polaco in 2025. We breed the Rare Rooster Acres line. Although originally bred from gamebirds, we have found this breed is not very gamey. They will defend themselves, their flockmates, and territory fiercely but are not overly aggressive. Roosters can be penned together as long as they were raised together but take care when introducing new birds to the flock. They are not aggressive towards humans. In fact, they are often very curious about their humans and will follow you around for treats.
This breed is prone to crooked toes and leg issues on account of their incredible growth rate and huge feet. "Perna Bamba", aka wobbly legs, occurs mainly in the cockbirds. This breed needs room to roam and will not do well in tight spaces. Extra room allows the birds to stretch out and walk around, decreasing the possibility of developing physical problems. Roost bars should be extra wide and low to the ground. They oftentimes prefer to lay on the ground instead of on a roost bar so in the wintertime, make sure they have adequate bedding on the floor so they can stay warm. We recommend starting them on a regimen of extra calcium carbonate (absorbed faster than oyster shell), vitamins, minerals, and greens as soon as 3 weeks old. We feed a 22% medicated chick starter until they come out of the brooder. A minimal 16% protein feed works well once they are out of the brooder so they do not grow too fast. Their feed should be raised as the birds grow and should be kept at head level. This helps the birds maintain their upright posture and reduces back and neck issues. The Indio Gigante matures very slowly and will continue to grow in size until about 18 months old. They feather in very slowly so do not do well in the cold. If raising chicks during winter or wet weather, make sure they are protected from drafts, cold, and rain. Even though they outgrow other breeds quickly, because they feather in slowly and can be clumsy as lanky juveniles, take extra care when raising them with other breeds. They often get knocked down and trampled or feather pecked. Hens are good seasonal layers of large tan eggs, do go broody, and make excellent mothers.
The Polaco Gigante is the naked neck version of the Indio Gigante. They are the same in most respects accept the Polaco has a bare neck and much less feathering. They tend to look almost completely bald all the time, meaning their dewlaps also look more pronounced at maturity. Our breeding pens are set up with heterozygous naked neck Polaco roosters over Indio hens. We do have one Polaco hen. Chicks can hatch either naked neck or normal. According to our research, Brazilian breeders do not recommend breeding Polaco to Polaco as the offspring will become shorter over time due to the increased influence of Turken genetics.
We also have a group of Gigante juveniles out of Rare Rooster Acres' Colossus and Valero in the grow out pen. These should make it to the breeding pens by the end of the 2026 season. At that point in time, we will be running a pen of regular Indio Gigante in addition to the Polaco/Indio pen and the two lines will be kept separate. So if you're looking for the best in regular Indio Gigante, I'd recommend waiting until the fall when we start hatching again. We absolutely love these gentle giants on the homestead. If you want a talking point for your chicken yard, this is the bird for you. Both hens and roosters are large and would make good table birds as well. We've processed some roosters that were almost the size of small turkeys.
We cannot guarantee that any chicks will grow up to be a certain height. We try to be mindful in breeding to keep the best birds we have in our breeding flock with height and health being at the top of the list. However, most birds will not hit the 40 inch mark. We cull very heavily for crooked toes, poor development, vigor, leg issues, and height. Please evaluate each chick/bird on its own merits.
