This is my culture's heritage chicken. The Hmong Blue Skin has been raised by the Hmong people in Southeast Asia for over a century and was brought over to the United States with the refugees who resettled here after the Vietnam War. They are a fibro breed, meaning their skin is dark, similar to the Ayam Cemani. Unlike the Ayam Cemani, they come in all different feather colors. The Hmong Blue Skin is missing the fibro enhancers which make their skin not as dark as the all black breeds. Hence, blue skin.  Roosters are tall, muscular, and protective but not aggressive towards people. Hens lay medium sized white, tan, and the occasional green egg. They are often broody and make amazing mothers. This is the broodiest breed on the homestead and will hatch out anything you put under them. My family has been raising this breed since the early 1980s when a great-uncle brought eggs to the US. The line has switched hands multiple times but has remained in my family for over 40 years. I obtained the line from a relative a few years back. We have added birds to the line over the years but have been fully committed to breeding the bird back to its original glory. The popularity of this breed has exploded in recent years with breeders that know very little about the bird's origins. Do not mistake this bird for mosaics. We are lucky enough to have family members who still remember what the original birds were supposed to be. We select for a large, upright, large-boned carcass, and feathering that is fit close to the body. We have both pea and single comb varieties in our flock. This breed was mostly used as a meat bird in the old country and is still coveted for its succulent meat in the Asian communities. The birds can be harvested young (4-5 months) for traditional Asian soups which call for tender, lean meat (like in the photos) or allowed to grow up to a year for a much larger, meatier bird (4-6 lbs dressed).

It is possible for two fibro Hmong Blue Skin parents to throw white skinned offspring. As the breed was originally a landrace breed, genetics are not always consistent. We are working to weed out the undesirable traits with our selective breeding. We have had a couple birds DNA test positive for the fibro genetic mutation, but phenotypically, the fibro is so light that the birds look white-skinned. This is due to a unique combination of melanin inhibitors in some birds, which effectively block out the expression of fibro. Our goal with this heritage bird is not to create a deeply black bird. These are not Ayam Cemani. They are, obviously, known as Hmong BLUE Skins, with lighter skin. The melanin inhibitors are inherent in the breed. Our goal is to breed a large, hearty, disease resistant, agile, predator savvy bird that does well in free range environments, can hatch and raise their own chicks, and exhibits the camouflage blue skin and varied feather color they are known for. These were the most important traits when the Hmong people, my people, raised them in the mountains and jungles of Southeast Asia. This is what the bird should be. Not an all-black bird. Not a fluffy mosaic. Can you tell I am passionate about this breed?? =)

We have pulled some of the light skinned birds to create their own pen of white-skinned Hmong chickens for those (like me) who prefer to eat the white skinned meat. You may hatch white-skinned chicks out of the hatching eggs from the blue-skin only pen. If you purchase chicks, we will try to fill your order with only chicks that are expressing fibro. However, as the bird grows, the fibro may lighten up some, especially in roosters once they reach full maturity and their hormones start to flow. We can confidently say however, that if they show fibro as chicks, they will still maintain the blue skin, even if lighter, in adulthood.
