The W. True Blue is the best blue layer on the homestead. We do not use the full name because a big hatchery has claimed the exclusive rights to use it. We started with over 50 pullets and culled them down to a handful of hens that lay nothing but the bluest sky blue. All hens who laid green or green tinted eggs were pulled from our breeding program. Our roosters have also been DNA tested to carry two blue genes. Interestingly enough, not all the W. True Blue birds from THAT hatchery carried two blue genes. All single copy blue gene birds were also pulled from the program. Our flock will breed true for blue eggs. The birds are a medium framed bird, most with a pea comb although some can have a single comb. They may or may not have muffs and/or a beard and come in all different feather colors. Our goal for this pen is to have the largest variety of feather colors possible while still maintaining the large sky blue eggs. They lay, on average, 5-6 eggs per week and outlay our Ameraucanas in both egg size and number. The birds are a little flightly, owing to their leghorn ancestory but are alert and great foragers. They do well in a free range environment.
Whiting True Blues and other breeds bred from the Ameraucana (like some varities of Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers) have a genetic predisposition for crossbeak. The genetics for crossbeak are linked to the genes that are responsible for muffs in Ameraucana and tufts in the original Araucana. Most chicks with crossbeak will die during incubation. Some may hatch with crossbeak. Others may develop it as the chick grows older. Crossbeak chickens will need extra care in feeding but they can live full, normal lives. In purchasing chicks or eggs from this breed, you acknowledge that you understand the possibility that crossbeak may occur and you will not be eligible for refunds or exchanges. We do not recommend using crossbeak birds in breeding and we will not take the chickens back due to biosecurity.
